Shopify discount not showing on the product page? Why, and how to show it

A Shopify discount does not show on the product page because a discount code or automatic discount is applied in the cart or at checkout. It does not change the product’s price. To show the lower price on the product, set a sale price: put the original price in Compare-at price and the new price in Price.

Why does my discount not show on the product page?

Section titled “Why does my discount not show on the product page?”

Shopify has two different ways to charge less, and they show up in different places.

Shopify discount (code or automatic) Sale price on the product
What it changes Nothing on the product The product’s price
Where the shopper sees it In the cart or at checkout On the product, in most themes as a strikethrough original price

So a discount that is set up correctly still leaves the product page showing the usual price. Nothing is broken. The savings show in the cart or at checkout. The full comparison is in Discount codes vs sale prices on Shopify.

Check before you change anything.

  1. Open your store in a private browser window.
  2. Add a product the discount should apply to.
  3. Go to the cart, then to checkout. If the discount is a code, enter it.

If the lower total shows there, the discount works and the product page is behaving as Shopify intends. If it does not, open the discount under Discounts and check its active dates, the products or collections it applies to, its minimum purchase requirements, which customers are eligible, and its usage limits.

Our advice: if the offer is for every visitor, use a sale price, because the product shows it before the shopper adds to cart. If it is for one group, such as first-time buyers, or depends on a condition such as a minimum spend, keep the discount and announce it with a banner. A sale price gives the lower price to every shopper, including those who would have paid full price.

How do I show the lower price on the product page?

Section titled “How do I show the lower price on the product page?”

Use a sale price. Shopify calls the strikethrough “before” price the compare-at price.

  1. In Shopify admin, go to Products and open the product. If it has variants, such as sizes, open a variant from the Variants section.
  2. In the Price section, type the original price into Compare-at price. If you do not see the field, click Compare at. If it already holds a price, note it first.
  3. Type the lower price into Price.
  4. Click Save, and repeat for each variant.

Most themes now show the original price with a strikethrough next to the new one. When the sale ends, copy the price in Compare-at price back into Price, then clear Compare-at price or put back the one you noted. The steps with a picture are in How to show a sale price on Shopify.

What if I have many products, or the sale has an end date?

Section titled “What if I have many products, or the sale has an end date?”

A sale price on many products means two fields on every variant, and the same edits in reverse when it ends. One missed variant stays at the sale price after the sale is over.

PriceDip on the Shopify App Store is an app that changes the price and compare-at price of the products you choose at a start time, and reverts them at an end time. It does not create discount codes or automatic discounts. See How to run a flash sale on Shopify for the setup.

Can an automatic discount show a strikethrough price on the product page?

Section titled “Can an automatic discount show a strikethrough price on the product page?”

An automatic discount does not change the product’s price or compare-at price, so it does not create the strikethrough price that a sale price does. Some themes and apps add their own discount messages to the product page, and how they behave depends on the theme or app.

How do I show a discounted price before checkout on Shopify?

Section titled “How do I show a discounted price before checkout on Shopify?”

Lower the product’s Price and put the original price in its Compare-at price. Most themes then show the original price with a strikethrough next to the new one on the product, before the shopper reaches the cart.

Will a discount code still work if I add a sale price?

Section titled “Will a discount code still work if I add a sale price?”

A discount code that applies to a product is applied on top of its sale price, so the shopper gets both reductions. Limit the code to full-price products, or switch it off, if you do not want that.
