Shopify Markets and sale prices: what happens to the compare-at price
In Shopify Markets, a market whose prices are a percentage of your base price follows a sale price automatically, and by default its compare-at price follows too. A market with fixed prices does not: its prices stay as they are until you change them. A Flash Sale task in PriceDip changes the base price and base compare-at price, so the same rule decides which markets its sale reaches.
How does a sale reach each market?
Section titled “How does a sale reach each market?”| Market pricing | What happens during a sale | What happens when it ends |
|---|---|---|
| A percentage of the base price | The market’s price follows the lower base price. Its compare-at price is derived from the base compare-at price. | The market’s prices follow the base prices back |
| Fixed prices set for the market | Only the base price and base compare-at price change. The market’s own prices stay as they are. | Nothing changes in that market |
The app does not set prices per market. It changes the product’s base prices, and Shopify works out the rest from each market’s settings.
What do I check in a market with a percentage adjustment?
Section titled “What do I check in a market with a percentage adjustment?”Shopify’s Help Center says a percentage price adjustment applies to compare-at prices by default, and that the market’s catalog has an Include compare-at price option.
- With the option on, the market shows the adjusted sale price next to the adjusted compare-at price.
- With it off, Shopify does not adjust the compare-at price for that market, and you set it by hand. The market still gets the lower price, so check what it shows as a strikethrough price.
A price you set by hand for one product in a market overrides the adjustment for that product. The sale does not reach that product in that market, as with a fixed price.
What do I do about a market with fixed prices?
Section titled “What do I do about a market with fixed prices?”The sale does not reach it. You have two choices:
- Leave it out. That market keeps its normal prices while your other markets run the sale.
- Edit that market’s prices yourself for the sale, and put them back afterwards. To show a strikethrough price there, set that market’s compare-at price as well as its price.
Our advice: before a big sale, list your markets and note which use fixed prices. It is easier to decide in advance than to find out from a customer.
Do EU and EEA markets show the compare-at price?
Section titled “Do EU and EEA markets show the compare-at price?”Shopify may hide compare-at prices for customers in the EEA when your primary market is outside the EEA. Each market has a Hide compare-at setting: go to Markets, open the market, and look for Compare-at price under its settings. The EU also has a rule about which strikethrough price a sale may show. Both are covered in EU 30-day lowest price rule. This is not legal advice.
How do I test a sale in each market?
Section titled “How do I test a sale in each market?”- Create the task on one or two products first.
- After the start time, view one of the products on your storefront as a shopper in each market, for example with the country selector on your store.
- Check the price and the strikethrough price in each.
- Set the task to Inactive and check each market again after the revert.
Frequently asked questions
Section titled “Frequently asked questions”Does PriceDip work with Shopify Markets?
Section titled “Does PriceDip work with Shopify Markets?”A PriceDip sale reaches a market whose prices are a percentage of the base price, because the market follows the base price. In a market with fixed prices, or for a product with a price set by hand in a market, the sale does not apply there. The task changes only the base price and base compare-at price.
Why is my sale not showing in one country?
Section titled “Why is my sale not showing in one country?”That country’s market most likely has fixed prices, or a price set by hand for the product. A sale changes the base price, and fixed market prices do not follow it. Change that market’s prices yourself if it should run the sale.
Why does a market show the sale price with no strikethrough price?
Section titled “Why does a market show the sale price with no strikethrough price?”Check two settings for that market: Include compare-at price on its catalog, and Hide compare-at. The lower price still applies either way.
